Creative vs media efficiency - the age-old debate. On one side, strong creative drives better marketing outcomes than precise media targeting, with compelling, memorable creative having a greater impact on attention, brand recall, and long-term effectiveness. On the other side, advocates of media efficiency contend that even great creative underperforms without accurate targeting, frequency, and placement, making distribution strategy equally or more critical. As a full service digital and creative agency we believe they need to work together and now AI presents even more opportunity for those who understand the dynamic.
A recent brief we were handed earlier this year provides a compelling example and useful case study. The brief itself was simple on paper, and exactly where we saw the opening to make creative and content production the competitive edge. The outcome was over two hundred unique creative assets, generated with combination of live action and AI, deployed across Meta and TikTok to Australian audiences in four weeks.
Our strategy was to build a paid social campaign that could move at the speed of live sport, without the budget or headcount of a broadcast production house. What we built instead was a working proof of a bigger idea - one we think every brand running paid social in 2026 needs. Creative isn't something you finish before the media plan starts. It's the variable that decides how well that plan performs. Budget doesn't buy results the way it used to. Creative does and besauce of this, creative is the new efficiency.
For years, paid social media has run on a simple model: build a strong hero asset, put budget behind it, let the algorithm do the rest. That model has now become disrupted. Meta and TikTok now optimise distribution around creative quality and variation, not just audience targeting and bid strategy. Both platforms score creative on engagement and use that to determine how far and how cheaply an asset travels. A single hero asset, however well made, gives the algorithm one data point to learn from. A library of variations - different hooks, different pacing, different overlays, tested against each other in near real-time — gives it dozens.
This is the shift behind every "why did our CPMs go up" conversation happening in marketing teams right now. Advertisers who ship more creative, faster, and read the signal coming back are outperforming advertisers who simply spend more. Media budget still matters, but it no longer wins on its own. The winning lever has moved upstream, into production. These results were not a coincidence but the result of a clear strategy.
How we used WSC Sports - and why it mattered
To build a reactive layer to meet live sport demands, we used WSC Sports, an AI-powered platform that generates highlight packages from live game feeds in near real time. On its own, WSC Sports is a content velocity tool, turning broadcast footage into usable clips before the competition is even over, enabling AI-tailored content experiences for fans. That speed is the whole point. However speed without judgement just produces more content, not better content.
That’s where our team came in. We treated WSC Sports as a production layer, not a finished product and applied it to a brand led distribution, not simply as a way of getting highlights out quickly. Every clip it generated went through our own creative logic - strategic text overlays, decisions about which moments actually warranted a push notification’s worth of urgency, and platform-specific formatting for Meta versus TikTok audiences. The output was more than 200 distinct assets across the four-week campaign, produced at a scale and pace no traditional shoot-edit-approve workflow could match. This is the model we think more agencies will need to adopt where AI supplies the raw material and the velocity, human strategy decides provides data on what’s worth scaling and the speed and agility to distribute.
What the data told us
The premium hero asset delivered what you'd expect from a flagship asset: 26 video views per dollar spent, a solid return with high engagement and completion. The reactive, AI-assisted layer went further, generating 133 video views per dollar, on the same campaign, same audience, same budget. That's not a marginal gain. That's a 5x, structural difference in efficiency
Surprisingly, text overlays also contributed, it wasn’t just about speed. Versions of highlights carrying stats, scores, and context outperformed clean versions consistently: 72% of completed views on Meta and 71% of destination clicks on TikTok came from overlaid content. Audiences on these platforms aren’t just watching the videos. They're reading while they watch, often with sound off. Design for both, or lose both.
Producing content tied to the highest-stakes moments of the competition outperformed set-and-forget placements by a wide margin. When stakes rise, attention rises with them — and creative that's built to move with that curve wins the budget efficiency argument outright. We've written before about why this matters: Capturing the Moment: How Sports Marketing Wins in Real Time.
Most agencies are built in silos. Creative sits in one team, media buying in another, and whatever "AI tooling" gets used sits with a vendor nobody in the room fully understands. That structure might have worked when campaigns ran on a single hero asset and a media plan set at kick-off. It doesn’t work when the winning move is deciding, mid-campaign, what to produce next, when to deploy it, and how to read the signal coming back within hours.
We built this campaign the way we build all of them, with brand strategy and creative direction, content production and AI tooling, platform media expertise, and data interpretation, sitting inside one team with one view of the campaign. That integration is what lets us treat WSC Sports as a production layer rather than a black box, decide in real time which overlay treatments to scale and which to drop, and shift budget toward the reactive layer as the data made the case. None of that is a single discipline’s job. It’s the intersection of creative, AI, and media - and it’s the reason results like a 5x efficiency increase occur.
When it comes to campaign execution, don't treat creative as a line item ticked off before the media plan begins, it is now a performance input which can be tested, varied and iterated at speed. That's not just a different mindset, it's a different operating model, and it's the one we've built ours around.
